With Starfield being the center of the Xbox 2023 Showcase last week, Bethesda gave us a deep dive into one of the biggest games this generation. While it's a respectable notion to let these troops showcase their talent in the field, it almost hurts to watch them interact with each other between missions. This is especially evident in some of the more intimate, dialogue-driven scenes, and this is really where the film gets bogged down. But at the end of the day, these guys are not actors, and it shows. Their tactical skills and military knowledge definitely lend a sense of credibility. You've gotta hand it to directors Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh for casting real life Navy SEALs as the main characters. It's about as fun as watching your friend play a solo campaign on Modern Warfare 3. And besides that, the overall action factor is nothing to write home about. It's clear that the film is trying to capitalize on titles like Call of Duty and Battlefield, but it feels more like a gimmick than anything else. Much of the cinematography is even shot like a first person shooter, with ample cutaways to the SEALs' personal points of view. In that sense, it really does feel like a video game.
Essentially the film is comprised of several loosely threaded missions that eventually lead to exactly nowhere. As a narrative, Act of Valor is barely a movie at all.
